FESTIVITIES AND UPKEEP KEEP OFF-SEASON STATE PARKS BUSY ALL IS NOT STILL AND SILENT IN THE SNOW, SAY PARK KEEPERS.(Local)

Picnic tables stand unoccupied and grills lie cold, awaiting hot charcoal and the tang of barbecue sauce.

Layers of snow cover hiking trails and sheets of ice mask the ripples and waves of the ponds.

Welcome to the off-season.

But at Capital District state parks - like Saratoga Spa and Grafton Lakes - the season never really ends.

Ninety full-time operations and maintenance workers at Grafton, Saratoga, Moreau Lake and John Boyd Thacher state parks and 150 pieces of equipment from trucks to snowmobiles are employed year-round, according to Steve Dyer, area manager for the state Office of Parks, …
